Liebster Award

Whoa!  The fabulous Marisa at Broke with Designer Taste has gifted me the Liebster Award!  I'm honored and excited and a little "omg"!

What is a Liebster Award, you ask?  I found lots of information from Marisa's blogpost, but also went looking for an origin. Then I realized that there's nothing original in an award holder trying to find the origins.  I didn't want to be unoriginal so I just paraphrased what I found out from a quick look through the Google search headlines:  Leibster started in Germany and the original rules required that the award recipient pass on the award to 3-5 bloggers who have less than 3000 followers... contrary to my award which is looking for bloggers with less than 200 followers.  Also, it's been around for a few years.  (I'm a personal fashion blogger, not a research blogger, sorry!)

And there's a pretty icon that I stole (but credited):

The award comes with rules (I'm a total rule follower, so yay!):

1. Each person must post 11 things about themselves.
2. Answer the questions the tagger has set for you
3. Create 11 new questions for the people you have tagged.
4. Choose 11 people with less than 200 followers and link them in your post.
5. Go to their page and tell them about the award.
6. If you have not done so yet, follow the tagger and visit at least three of the nominees.
7. Remember, no tag backs.

I've been working on the post all weekend and finally feel ready to sit down and tackle this... here goes!

First, post 11 things about yourself:

I hate to cook.
I can't swim.
I had a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (best thing ever, as far as surgery goes).
I had Lasik eye surgery (second best thing ever, again in the surgery category).
I play viola, not professionally - but have only recently discovered that it's super satisfying and fulfilling.
I think I would make a great pool shark.
My teeth are my favorite body part.  (how's that sentence structure?)
I hate my hair and am convinced it's thinning at an alarming rate.
I want to skydive.
Someday I want to live somewhere without a real winter.
I love video poker at the casino.

Second, answer the questions the tagger has set for you:

1. What is one item you cannot live without?
Is internet an item?

2. What is something really exciting that has happened to you recently?
I performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.
3. What is your favorite food?
Chips and salsa.  and wine.

4. Why did you start blogging?
At first I wanted to start a writing hobby.  Though, all the blogs I followed weren't about writing at all but about daily outfits, and I couldn't get enough of real ladies wearing real clothes.  I'm still hoping to continue my writing hobby but the outfit thing has proven to be really fun and not as frivolous as I feared.

5. Must have {one day} designer item?
I like nice stuff, but designer?  Maybe a new pair of designer jeans when my shopping ban is over.

6. What would you say your style is?

7. Job, career, student? What do you consumer your week doing?
Career.  I purposely keep it very separate from the blog, although I would love to tell you all about it...  I just can't.  It's a secret.  I'm very bad with secrets.

8. Tell us one thing that you don't often share.
See number 7.

9.What would you stay your style is?
See number 6.

10. Absolute favorite thing to do.
Drink wine with friends.

11. What do you want to be when you grow up?
Well traveled.

Third, create 11 new questions for the people you've tagged.

1) Besides fashion, what other types of blogs do you follow?
2) How many hours a week do you spend on your blog?
3) Riskiest thing you've ever done?
4) Flight or invisibility?
5) Phobias?
6) Favorite item of clothing?
7) Earliest memory?
8) Favorite toy from childhood?
9) How many pairs of shoes do you own?
10) Do all of your friends know about your blog?
11) Favorite thing about blogging?

Fourth, choose 11 bloggers with less than 200 followers (uh, oh! I don't think I know 11 bloggers with less than 200 followers.  Maybe I'm doing this all wrong!  If I should be following you and you have less than 200 followers, comment and let me know!  I'll amend this right away!!!)

Tattoos and Pearls
Urban Frill
Megan Mae Daily
Rachel's Look Book
Work Clothes, I Suppose
Fashion for Sanity

These are the blogs I would love to share the award with if the rules allowed it:

Fashion for Giants
Thrift and Shout
Ladies in Navy
Coffee Beans and Bobby Pins
Olive and an Arrow

I think I can take on the rest of the rules from here.  Go visit all these sites and say hi!

Thank you Marisa, it's a true honor!

End of really long post.

Too fancy for errands?

This is just a weekend outfit and I admit that I put a little bit more time into this one than a Sunday outfit usually gets!

I went to work for a couple of hours (boo!), stopped in for a beer at my friend's new bar and ran to the grocery store. Nothing special... but I was super stressed that morning and I've found that taking outfit pictures in the back of the house with just me, the tripod and the sunshine relaxes me.  I also think that spending some time in my closet and putting together an outfit is a great diversion from fretting about the other stuff, at least for a few minutes.

Now that I've talked up the outfit (and it still reads a bit weekend-y) I feel the need to point out that I never wear heels, statement jewelry or lipstick during weekend afternoons:

Whoops - one up, one down!

Is this why we blog our outfits?  It is a hobby and something that we work on and for me - something that can relieve a bit of stress.  You have to get dressed every day, right?  Might as well make those few minutes of decision making into something purposeful - be it part of a wake-up routine, part confidence boost or part self-expression.

Deep, I know.

Fun in the trees!

I know that I was complaining a couple of posts ago that I've been too busy to really get outside this summer.  But!  I lied a little because last Friday Adam and I got to spend some awesome quality time with my sister Beth and her family playing outside.

The nearby ski resort has a great ropes course set up for the summer time called Sky High Adventure Park.  It's a ropes course with zip lines literally set up in the trees!

They harnas you up, give you a quick lesson on how to lock in and let you loose!  Some of the "features" require not only some upper body strength but some good old fashioned courage.  My brave niece Sally took a few minutes before she jumped off of this platform to swing across to the next tree... and she made it - eventually!

"Go, Sally! Go!"

Concentrating in knee highs.

My sister was always ready for the camera - even mid zip-line!

Hi honey!
Afterwards we cleaned up and went out to dinner.  I made sure to keep up with my knee-high sock theme from earlier:

Do you have a zip line or ropes course near you?!  If so, you should check it out!

Earlier this month my family congregated in Colorado for our yearly family vacation.  I think I've mentioned before that I am the youngest of eight kids.  My five sisters and I were out shopping one day and they all agreed to do an Old Time Photo shoot!!!! (I've never done one and it was so fun and my sisters rock!)

Ready for this?!

I love my sisters.  So much!  Aren't they beautiful?!

I'm trying to like it

It's been a stressful summer, no lie.  The aftermath of the stress means that I haven't spent nearly enough time outside either camping or kayaking or hiking.  I'm trying really hard to take daily walks (which I was so good at doing last year), but AcK!  I need some balance.

I've had a couple of big work intense weeks and this week while traveling for work I have to do a big presentation.  I'm almost prepared.  Hopefully next week at this time I'll be ready to ease down into a manageable stress level and start feeling normal again.  Normal is not the right word - maybe I should look forward to feeling healthy and creative and relaxed and confident and organized.  Ideally, these are the things I work towards when I'm not all bogged down in silly stress.  OK - Thanks for letting me vent... I know my situation is far from special as we all have lives full of stressors.  Next week I will aim to write a big positive post celebrating these stressors and how they make our lives interesting and lively.

On to the questionable outfit of the week:

This skirt is newish... in that I've worn it only once before back in April.  I can't believe it has taken me this long to wear it again.  I'm still on the fence about liking it and will probably not donate it quite yet.  I want to try it next with booties, I think.

I hope the rest of you aren't home on a Saturday night prepping a presentation and complaining about it on your blog.

I Swoon for Jeans

I love the summer and the heat and the lack of snow... but I missed wearing jeans!

The last 2 times I wore this jacket I strongly felt the need to belt it, because I was wearing it with skirts, and because I'm pretty hooked on belting my waist no matter what.

Today, I never even considered belting the jacket.  It's because of the jeans.  I *swoon* for jeans.

I'm feeling the mid-week blahs... and I've got nothing else to share.  I hope you had a lovely hump day!

EBEW - Monochromatic

This was a fun link up from Everybody Everywhere!  At first I thought I surely didn't have anything but neutrals that I could match from head to toe.  But once I started sifting through the closet goods I found out that I could have worn all red, all pink, all yellow or all teal!  And this morning was a teal morning:

I did some wardrobe organizing and purging tonight, which is in compliance of my shopping ban rules.  I can't believe that I ever think I need to go shopping. So much clothes! Yikes. Hopefully I'll be doing a lot of remixing this fall and enjoying some old forgotten items in my wardrobe.

Did you link up?

Yo Rocky!

This dress was forgotten at the tailor's all summer.  I had the sleeves cut off because my huge biceps were busting through the seams.  The best part was that I paid for it last time I was there, so it was as if it was free!  And now my biceps are free as well.

Has anyone watched Downton Abbey?  I've blown through the first season on Netflix and am so upset that I have to wait for the DVD to show up in the mail to see the next episode.  I wish I talked like them, but I'm really bad at accents.  I can pull up my Minnesota accent most of the time, although it's much better after I've been home for a few days.  (Oh, did ya know that I grew up in Minnesota?! You betcha! they really say that - it's so cute!)

Adam gets a big kick out of my "German Philosopher" accent, but that usually only shows up when I'm very tired or hungover (punch drunk), never on demand.  Sometimes I think I'm Rocky.  But, I've never seen the Rocky movies and apparently Rocky doesn't say "Yo Rock-EE", instead I'm supposed to say "Yo A-dri-AN!" in that voice.  Who's Adrian?

Accents and regional lexicons totally fascinate me.  I grew up saying "pop" and "tennies" (or tennis shoes for sneakers).  My mom used to call the couch a davenport and apparently some people around here think the work MILK has an "e" in it.  I love this stuff.  Any favorites?!

It's Not Yet Monday

It's Sunday night and I'm trying really hard to stay right here in Sunday night.  I'm not thinking about work or the other distractions and obligations I've got lined up this week.  Right now it's just me, a glass of wine and a little bit of blogging then perhaps my book or phone call to a friend?  Either way I'm not thinking about work.  I'm not thinking about that presentation.  I'm just not gonna go there. Actually, I'm gonna quit writing about it right now.  (Do you use "gonna" when typing?  Is it a word?  Blogger doesn't underline it and call it out as misspelled.  I quite like it, especially when used with "not".  It's a little bit spoiled sounding, "I'm not gonna do it!  Nah nah nah nah boo boo!  Hrumph.")

Blogging has slipped pretty far down on the priority list lately.  At least I got a bunch of other tasks checked off the list this weekend; laundry, grocery shopping, practicing and exercising, you know, the exciting stuff (all these things have nothing to do with work!  Wait, what's work?  It's Sunday, not Monday... not yet!)

Since I'm not shopping for new clothes, accessories like pink hats, dangly earrings, rose gold necklaces and glasses are the current highlights of my wardrobe:

Oh, and these green shoes can take me anywhere.  What doesn't match green shoes?  (please don't say pink hats.)

*raising glass* Here's to Sunday nights!

Weary Traveler

Ah!  Colorado!  My big family does a yearly summer vacation - somewhere different every year.  We spent last week in the mountains, and it was wonderful!  The scenery, the weather, the company and some unexpected wildlife made for a great time!

I was up veeerrrryyy early on the morning of the outbound flight, so my travel outfit pictures are a little squinty.

And I bought a hat and wore it home!  (I don't think hats were in my shopping ban rules... and I was on vacation so I can break my own rules, right?)

So pretty

Is that a moose?

The adventurous part of the family - group hike to Adam's Falls.

I am the youngest of 8 kids and my parents have 20 grandkids.  Not everyone joined in on the vacation this year, but we tend to have a big group where ever we go.  I heart my family... and Colorado!

Patterns and Puckers

When Marionberry Style gave the heads up to her upcoming Trend of the Month link up I tried this outfit first:

It's pretty tame as far as pattern mixing goes.  This is an old Banana blouse, and I love the pattern but like most silk-like blouses (I'm not sure if it's really silk, it's shiny and slippery) the buttons don't stay shut in the middle - you get me? This happens so much that I really veer away from the classic button-ups.  I think I'm the only OOTD blogger that doesn't have a chambray shirt, although, the less fancy the shirt the less likely it is to pucker.

Oh, and yes, that's a new purse.  I bought it before the shopping ban.... so, it's not against the rules.  I have lots of "new" stuff to wear before the ban ends.

Do your shirts pucker?  Should I just buy them a size larger and tailor them?  I'm not very happy with my tailor right now, plus I don't want to pay for it.  It felt like a great idea this spring, but I'm over it.

The Blue Skirt

My favorite color is blue and this blue skirt is one of my favorites.  I've only worn it a couple times this summer and both outfits never made it to the blog - so I thought I would give the skirt some blog love. {here's the love: Hi favorite blue skirt!  You're just a little thick and warm for this summer.  I'll wear you more in the fall!  Can't wait ~ XOXO!}

I guess this blue is almost a neutral, almost a shade of denim and I find it really easy to mix with different colors.  I also love the built-in, thick, elastic waist band that I can layer with shorter tops and not feel the need for a belt.  Sometimes I feel that all I do is belt my outfits.  I need a new "trick".

Also - a little update on my shopping ban: I get all kinds of coupons and discount mailers - every day in the mailbox!  Daily reminders of the sales I won't shop.  Argh - it's so tough to keep throwing them out.  Kohl's, Macy's, Banana, Gap, DSW, Delias (don't judge)... I'm on all their lists.  I guess I could hand them out to my friends, but it seems they're all poor, too!  Ha!  No really, then I would have to NOT throw the coupon/ discount away and actually carry it around with me until I found these shopper friends - too tempting.  Confession:  I bought new PJs today.  They were on sale.  I should never have walked into Marshall's.  What was I thinking?  (I needed and iPad sleeve). I'm back on the wagon, though, don't worry!

Trend of the Month - Pattern Mixing

I'm linking up with the Marionberry Style trend of the month - and this time around it's pattern mixing

I wore the tank version below while prepping for last weekend's camping trip.  This outfit started out a little more work friendly with the button up below.  I'm a lucky little office gal in that I work half day Fridays - all - year - long!  That usually means I get to wear 3 outfits on Fridays (work, afternoon and evening)!

This also means that I was able to pattern mix (and snap pictures) for work and for the afternoon sun:

What do you think of the pattern mixing trend?  Head over to Marionberry Style to see how everyone else is mixing their patterns!
