We're so grown up!

Adam and I bought a pool table!  I feel so mature.

We found it used on Craigslist from a guy named David, who was selling his house to move in with his girlfriend. Apparently there was no room for the pool table at Jennifer's house.  (As we pulled away she practically begged me to take the mounted deer head, too - "Quick!  Before David notices it's gone!")

Today was David's official move-out day, so there were a ton of people at his house moving everything out as Adam and I worked on disassembling the pool table.  We spent more than 2 hours with these strangers, and happily, everyone was super nice and helpful.

I have the camera set up on a tri-pod. We've been taking pictures every couple of minutes so we can put together a cool time-lapse video of the setup.  I'll post it once it's finished!

Anyway - we still have a lot of work to do to get this done tonight, so I better get back down there...
Here's a picture of me helping:

Watch out for this future pool shark!

Well well looky here

So here's my blog.  Still sitting here like a loyal pup waiting for me to come back. I'm more of a cat person but can't think of the cat-counterpoint phrase to use with "loyalty". My cats probably wouldn't still be waiting for me 7 months later. But! The dog.  Maybe?  The blog?  Yes.

I left off back in the savory days of late August.  Outfit posts and summer vacations. We were looking to buy a house and starting to pack up the apartment. Orchestra and viola lessons were starting up and life keeps going even without a blog post. Funny that.

With a new address and the winter blues starting to melt away, it's time to start documenting things in this place again, I think.  Here's my first outfit picture taken at the new house:

I need to start a new relationship with More Charming In Person.  I got too caught up in the outfit posts and the community of Outfit a Day Bloggers.  I'm not here to make money or jump into a popularity game with page views and comments.  I see how a lot of bloggers do such a great job at at gaining readership through networking and supporting each other.  I am impressed and awed by so many of these ladies... but I just can't keep up.

I don't need a huge following to make this side-project blog valuable to me.  I need to value blogging as a hobby that's a good fit for my spare time.  Sometimes I get really down on my viola skills and think I should be a better and more confident player.  But then I realize that the fact that I play viola most days of the week is a pretty neat hobby.  I'm learning and creating and thinking and practicing.  Practice should be part of any well-balanced day, yes?  Any kind of practice - cooking, meditating, running, praying, cleaning, loving - brings our minds away from the mundane or the boredom, keeping us alive.

Cats help too.

He looks grumpy.  But he's just being helpful.

I'm not sure how More Charming will evolve but I'm excited about the process of leading it down a couple of different roads and finding out a little bit more about myself along the way.

Liebster Award

Whoa!  The fabulous Marisa at Broke with Designer Taste has gifted me the Liebster Award!  I'm honored and excited and a little "omg"!

What is a Liebster Award, you ask?  I found lots of information from Marisa's blogpost, but also went looking for an origin. Then I realized that there's nothing original in an award holder trying to find the origins.  I didn't want to be unoriginal so I just paraphrased what I found out from a quick look through the Google search headlines:  Leibster started in Germany and the original rules required that the award recipient pass on the award to 3-5 bloggers who have less than 3000 followers... contrary to my award which is looking for bloggers with less than 200 followers.  Also, it's been around for a few years.  (I'm a personal fashion blogger, not a research blogger, sorry!)

And there's a pretty icon that I stole (but credited):

Photo from here

The award comes with rules (I'm a total rule follower, so yay!):

1. Each person must post 11 things about themselves.
2. Answer the questions the tagger has set for you
3. Create 11 new questions for the people you have tagged.
4. Choose 11 people with less than 200 followers and link them in your post.
5. Go to their page and tell them about the award.
6. If you have not done so yet, follow the tagger and visit at least three of the nominees.
7. Remember, no tag backs.

I've been working on the post all weekend and finally feel ready to sit down and tackle this... here goes!

First, post 11 things about yourself:

I hate to cook.
I can't swim.
I had a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (best thing ever, as far as surgery goes).
I had Lasik eye surgery (second best thing ever, again in the surgery category).
I play viola, not professionally - but have only recently discovered that it's super satisfying and fulfilling.
I think I would make a great pool shark.
My teeth are my favorite body part.  (how's that sentence structure?)
I hate my hair and am convinced it's thinning at an alarming rate.
I want to skydive.
Someday I want to live somewhere without a real winter.
I love video poker at the casino.

Second, answer the questions the tagger has set for you:

1. What is one item you cannot live without?
Is internet an item?

2. What is something really exciting that has happened to you recently?
I performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

3. What is your favorite food?
Chips and salsa.  and wine.

4. Why did you start blogging?
At first I wanted to start a writing hobby.  Though, all the blogs I followed weren't about writing at all but about daily outfits, and I couldn't get enough of real ladies wearing real clothes.  I'm still hoping to continue my writing hobby but the outfit thing has proven to be really fun and not as frivolous as I feared.

5. Must have {one day} designer item?
I like nice stuff, but designer?  Maybe a new pair of designer jeans when my shopping ban is over.

6. What would you say your style is?
Trying.

7. Job, career, student? What do you consumer your week doing?
Career.  I purposely keep it very separate from the blog, although I would love to tell you all about it...  I just can't.  It's a secret.  I'm very bad with secrets.

8. Tell us one thing that you don't often share.
See number 7.

9.What would you stay your style is?
See number 6.

10. Absolute favorite thing to do.
Drink wine with friends.

11. What do you want to be when you grow up?
Well traveled.

Third, create 11 new questions for the people you've tagged.

1) Besides fashion, what other types of blogs do you follow?
2) How many hours a week do you spend on your blog?
3) Riskiest thing you've ever done?
4) Flight or invisibility?
5) Phobias?
6) Favorite item of clothing?
7) Earliest memory?
8) Favorite toy from childhood?
9) How many pairs of shoes do you own?
10) Do all of your friends know about your blog?
11) Favorite thing about blogging?

Fourth, choose 11 bloggers with less than 200 followers (uh, oh! I don't think I know 11 bloggers with less than 200 followers.  Maybe I'm doing this all wrong!  If I should be following you and you have less than 200 followers, comment and let me know!  I'll amend this right away!!!)

Tattoos and Pearls
Urban Frill
Megan Mae Daily
Rachel's Look Book
Work Clothes, I Suppose
Fashion for Sanity

These are the blogs I would love to share the award with if the rules allowed it:

Fashion for Giants
Thrift and Shout
Ladies in Navy
Coffee Beans and Bobby Pins
Olive and an Arrow

I think I can take on the rest of the rules from here.  Go visit all these sites and say hi!

Thank you Marisa, it's a true honor!

End of really long post.

Too fancy for errands?

This is just a weekend outfit and I admit that I put a little bit more time into this one than a Sunday outfit usually gets!

I went to work for a couple of hours (boo!), stopped in for a beer at my friend's new bar and ran to the grocery store. Nothing special... but I was super stressed that morning and I've found that taking outfit pictures in the back of the house with just me, the tripod and the sunshine relaxes me.  I also think that spending some time in my closet and putting together an outfit is a great diversion from fretting about the other stuff, at least for a few minutes.

Now that I've talked up the outfit (and it still reads a bit weekend-y) I feel the need to point out that I never wear heels, statement jewelry or lipstick during weekend afternoons:

Whoops - one up, one down!

Is this why we blog our outfits?  It is a hobby and something that we work on and for me - something that can relieve a bit of stress.  You have to get dressed every day, right?  Might as well make those few minutes of decision making into something purposeful - be it part of a wake-up routine, part confidence boost or part self-expression.

Deep, I know.

Fun in the trees!

I know that I was complaining a couple of posts ago that I've been too busy to really get outside this summer.  But!  I lied a little because last Friday Adam and I got to spend some awesome quality time with my sister Beth and her family playing outside.

The nearby ski resort has a great ropes course set up for the summer time called Sky High Adventure Park.  It's a ropes course with zip lines literally set up in the trees!

They harnas you up, give you a quick lesson on how to lock in and let you loose!  Some of the "features" require not only some upper body strength but some good old fashioned courage.  My brave niece Sally took a few minutes before she jumped off of this platform to swing across to the next tree... and she made it - eventually!

"Go, Sally! Go!"

Concentrating in knee highs.

My sister was always ready for the camera - even mid zip-line!

Hi honey!
Afterwards we cleaned up and went out to dinner.  I made sure to keep up with my knee-high sock theme from earlier:

Do you have a zip line or ropes course near you?!  If so, you should check it out!

Sisters

Earlier this month my family congregated in Colorado for our yearly family vacation.  I think I've mentioned before that I am the youngest of eight kids.  My five sisters and I were out shopping one day and they all agreed to do an Old Time Photo shoot!!!! (I've never done one and it was so fun and my sisters rock!)

Ready for this?!

I love my sisters.  So much!  Aren't they beautiful?!

I'm trying to like it

It's been a stressful summer, no lie.  The aftermath of the stress means that I haven't spent nearly enough time outside either camping or kayaking or hiking.  I'm trying really hard to take daily walks (which I was so good at doing last year), but AcK!  I need some balance.

I've had a couple of big work intense weeks and this week while traveling for work I have to do a big presentation.  I'm almost prepared.  Hopefully next week at this time I'll be ready to ease down into a manageable stress level and start feeling normal again.  Normal is not the right word - maybe I should look forward to feeling healthy and creative and relaxed and confident and organized.  Ideally, these are the things I work towards when I'm not all bogged down in silly stress.  OK - Thanks for letting me vent... I know my situation is far from special as we all have lives full of stressors.  Next week I will aim to write a big positive post celebrating these stressors and how they make our lives interesting and lively.

On to the questionable outfit of the week:

This skirt is newish... in that I've worn it only once before back in April.  I can't believe it has taken me this long to wear it again.  I'm still on the fence about liking it and will probably not donate it quite yet.  I want to try it next with booties, I think.

I hope the rest of you aren't home on a Saturday night prepping a presentation and complaining about it on your blog.
